GMC reg: 3668513Mr Sharma qualified from St. Thomas’ Hospital, University of London and trained as a physician and ophthalmologist. He received higher specialist training in Birmingham, St. Thomas’ Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. After spending 2 years in further specialist training doing a surgical retinal fellowship and 1 year in medical retina and uveitis I have been working as an NHS consultant at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre since 2006. I am actively involved in improving digital record keeping and was the Clinical Informatics Lead at City and Sandwell Hospitals Trust as they transitioned from paper-based records to a completely paperless system with full electronic patient records. I am still involved with upgrading the ophthalmic digital record at the Birmingham Eye Centre. I act as a medical expert witness and publish reports and statements for the Court in medicolegal matters. Based on this wealth of experience I am keen to bring high quality, specialist level ophthalmic care directly to patients who will benefit from it as well as provide an expert opinion on more complex cases.

Ophthalmology - Diabetic Retinopathy • Ophthalmology - Medical Retina • Ophthalmology - Refractive Surgery (Including Cataract, Lens And Laser) • Ophthalmology - Vitreoretinal Surgery
In addition to adult general ophthalmology I have a specialist interest in complex cataract, diseases of the retina and vitreous, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachments and macular disorders (wet AMD, macular degeneration, epiretinal membranes, puckers and macular holes). I receive referrals for complex cataracts, ocular trauma and lens implant problems (decentred/dislocated implants) as well as more routine cataract cases. I am actively involved in developing new approaches to complex cataract and retinal problems particularly in children and have published widely on these in peer-reviewed journals. I am involved in teaching and training junior surgeons and give lectures nationally and internationally on my area of work.
