Mr Andrew Harris

Mr Andrew Harris is an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon and Fellowship trained Head and Neck Surgeon. His particular interest is the investigation and treatment of Head and Neck cancer, benign salivary gland disease, and airway, swallowing and voice disorders.  In his NHS role, Mr Harris is based in the Royal Gwent Hospital, with weekly operating session in The Grange University Hospital. A large part of his NHS workload is spent in the diagnosis, workup and treatment of cancers of the throat, voice box, salivary glands, and neck nodes (Head and Neck Cancer). Mr Harris is the Clinical Lead for Head and Neck Cancer for Aneurin Bevan UHB and core member of the Aneurin Bevan, and South East Wales Head and Neck Multi-Disciplinary Teams, and attends meetings with both on a weekly basis. He trains junior surgeons in performing large operations for cancer, such as neck dissection, laryngectomy, and removal of the salivary glands (for benign or malignant tumours). Mr Harris has a particular interest in Trans-Oral Laser Microsurgery, and is able to remove many isolated tumours of the larynx and tonsils using this approach.  The remainder of his NHS time is used treating patients with voice, airway and swallowing difficulties. Mr Harris runs a regular joint voice clinic in conjunction with Speech and Language Therapy, and works with specialist anaesthetists, using state of the art techniques to allow him to operate on the voice box and windpipe through the mouth. He has a particular interest in stenosis of the airway, and larynx, and in treating patients with cricopharyngeal hypertrophy or pharyngeal pouch. In addition to clinical work, Mr Harris is involved in research, and acts as the departmental research lead. He leads on original research and in facilitating national trials within the department. Mr Harris is an Assistant Editor for The Journal of Laryngology and Otology (a national peer reviewed ENT journal). Mr Harris completed his medical degree at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (Exeter and Plymouth), and holds a Masters of Science from the University of Edinburgh. Since qualifying as a doctor, he has completed the majority of training in Wales, prior to his Advanced Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology in Oxford.
