Mr Matthew J.W. Hubble MBBS, FRCSI, FRCS (Tr&Orth). Mr Hubble has been a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Exeter and a member of the Exeter Hip Unit since 2001. He specialises in hip surgery, particularly primary and revision hip joint replacement, hip fracture surgery and the management of metastatic tumours in the pelvis and femur. He is one of the UKs most experienced hip specialists and was one of the first surgeons in the UK to be trained in robotic hip surgery. This is often combined with muscle sparing surgical approaches. He and his team have performed several thousand primary hip replacements and over five hundred complex and revision procedures. Matthew studied medicine at London University and graduated from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1989. Before University he served in the British army with the Gurkhas in Hong Kong and later as a volunteer medical officer with the Parachute Regiment. He trained in orthopaedic surgery in Bristol and the South West UK and was also a lecturer in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at the University of Bristol from 1995 to 2000. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1993 and passed the UK Diploma in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 1999. In 2000 he then undertook a surgical fellowship in Melbourne, Australia, specialising in hip, knee and complex trauma surgery. The Exeter hip unit is internationally recognized and Mr Hubble lectures and trains surgeons from around the world, including being the supervisor of the Exeter hip fellowship programme. He is also a member of Stryker corporation’s Exeter hip development group and is a trainer in robotic surgery. In 2008 he was made an international member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, in 2009 he was an honorary visiting surgeon at Queensland University (QUT) in Australia and in 2013 he was made an honorary member of the Argentinian Hip and Knee Society. He is also a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Matthew was the lead surgeon for Trauma surgery at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital from 2010 to 2012 and was then appointed as the Clinical Director of the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre, Exeter from 2013-2015. In addition to his work as a surgeon he is also director of the Exeter Bone Bank, an NHS tissue transplant facility which provides bone graft for use in complex reconstructive surgery. He is a member of the Royal Devon Hospitals / University of Exeter Hip research group and has published over 80 book chapters and research papers on hip surgery. He is regularly invited to lecture to national and international conferences on hip surgery. In the last 3 years alone this has included conferences in America, Canada, India, Singapore, Greece, Ireland, Malaysia, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Romania and the UK.
