Graeme Nicol is a Consultant in Orthopaedics with specialist interests and training in hip and knee replacement surgery, as well as hip joint preservation surgery. Not only embracing the common procedure of hip replacement, Mr. Nicol is one of a small group of fellowship trained surgeons in the UK who is trained to perform hip replacements through a direct anterior approach. This aims to improve patient’s postoperative pain and function. He also performs the more specialist procedure of hip revision surgery, for those whose replacement has run its course, and the even more specialist and relatively innovative procedure of Hip Arthroscopy with a keyhole incision. Alongside these treatments, Mr. Nicol runs a specialist clinic for young and adolescent hip problems, creating a truly all encompassing service. He is able to offer an expert opinion and treatment on any aspect of hip disease, giving excellent patient care paired with experienced bedside manner. During his training, Mr. Nicol obtained degrees in Medicine (MBChB), a BMSc (Hons) in Applied Orthopaedic Technology, and a Master’s (MSc) in Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Orthopaedic Technology. He completed two and a half years of internationally renowned fellowship training programmes in Ottawa, Canada, and Bristol, England. He worked as a Consultant specialising in pelvic trauma and young adult hip pathology in Bristol, prior to returning home to Scotland. He is extremely active in the research side of Orthopaedics as well as teaching and the presentation of aspects which he learned and has developed during and since his fellowships. Mr. Nicol takes a holistic approach to the care of his patients, with the aim of pain relief and a restored level of function, ensuring his patients are aware of all the treatment options. He helps patients choose the best treatment options for them, with their goals and expectations at the heart of the care he delivers. In October 2022, Mr. Nicol won an NHS Tayside Gold Star Award for Innovation and Improvement. Outside of work, Graeme is a true family man, spending much of his time sharing his equestrian hobby with his daughters.
