Dr Vinay Sharma

Mrs Vinay Sharma qualified as the Best Graduate of her batch 1970-75 winning several medals and distinctions during her undergraduate career. Initially she worked in General Medicine & Paediatrics, when she also gave birth to her first child in 1978. After obtaining a Diploma in Child Health she decided to become a Gynaecologist & Obstetrician. Completing junior training & passing the MRCOG between 1980-84, she joined the pioneering team at King’s College Hospital that established ultrasound based technology & ambulatory services for IVF patients as practiced today across the world. She also conducted several fundamental research trials, had her 2nd child & obtained PhD from the University of London (Title: “Endocrine Factors affecting the Outcome of Assisted Conception”) in this period. In 1987, she was invited by the Ministry of Health, Singapore to establish the Assisted Conception Units in Singapore General Hospital & Thomson Medical Centre. In August 1991, she joined St James’s University Hospital in Leeds where she established the ART services. She has been the HFEA Person Responsible since early 1990’s and her service at the top of the HFEA League tables in the 1st year has consistently featured amongst the top 5 since. Even when she was a full time NHS consultant she remained academically active, published 77 peer-review papers & book chapters, co-authored >100 presentations in international meetings, conducted 38 clinical research trials and trained 27 super-specialists in Reproductive Medicine many of whom are established & well known in their own right. She has supervised 8 successful MD students (Leeds Uni) and 2 MSc students. She has played a pivotal role in the establishment of Leeds Fertility (previously The Leeds Centre for Reproductive Medicine) after merger of the two services in Leeds. As the PR she aspires to run a safe, empathetic, successful & compliant service but one with a human touch and the ability to adapt to the changing requirements of her patients, the NHS and the regulators. She hopes to nurture an environment of constant learning and perpetual quest for improvement. In her spare time she reads history, watches documentaries, has an interest in travel to observe various civilisations & cultures of the world. Most of all, she beholds what is common to all i.e. music & the nurturing human instinct.
