Dr Nigel Hacking

I first qualified in Medicine in 1980 from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School. After obtaining the MRCP qualification I then underwent my Radiology Training at the Southampton University Hospitals. I took up a Consultant post in Southampton in 1991. An extensive Vascular and Non-Vascular Interventional Radiology practice was then developed within the NHS. I pioneered many advances in Interventional Radiology throughout the 1990’s. I was one of the UK's and world pioneers in Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE/UAE) and set up large practices in the Caribbean and East Africa and have trained numerous Interventional radiologists in UK and overseas in the procedure. In 2010-2011 Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE) was developed in Sao Paulo and Lisbon. I visited both centres and worked closely with the Interventional Radiologists involved. I introduced PAE into the UK in 2013 and set up the first and to date only multi centre study on PAE in the world. As clinical lead for UK-ROPE (Registry Of Prostate Embolisation) I was able to show the safety and effectiveness of the procedure which enabled NICE to recognize PAE as an alternative to TURP and other surgical interventions for men with symptomatic prostate enlargement in 2018. I trained most of the UK based and many other International Interventional Radiologists in PAE and continue to research into its uses. I retired from the NHS in 2020 to concentrate on my private prostate and fibroid embolisation practices in UK and overseas.
