GMC reg: 4426790Dr Joel Mawdsley is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Guys and St Thomas's NHS trust where he is clinical lead for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease team and joint clinical lead for the gastro department. In this role his focus is on delivering first class care to his patients with service innovation and research driven practice. He specialises in luminal gastroenterology, endoscopy (having been an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Colonoscopist) and inflammatory bowel disease. Joel studied medicine at Cambridge University where he was awarded a first-class honours degree and the Max Bull Prize for medicine. He gained a broad training in gastroenterology as a registrar in the North West Thames region, spending time at Imperial College Healthcare and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Joel was a clinical research fellow at the Royal London from 2005-2007 where he completed a Doctorate of Medicine on the role of stress and psychoneuroimmunology in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, publishing several high impact papers. He has maintained an active research interest being involved in clinical research studies in IBD and with a particular interest in the brain-gut axis. Between 2014-2017 he was a Colonoscopist in the National Bowel Cancer Screening program, having passed a rigorous assessment process and being continually audited to Key Performance indicators. More recently he has taken up the role of joint Training Programme Director for Gastroenterology in South East London, being responsible for ensuring high quality training for the gastroenterology trainees across the Sector. Joel is also President of the Gastroenterology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine and joint lead for the organising committee of the London IBD forum.
