Dr David Sarkar

Dr Sarkar graduated with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Immunology from the University of London and Medical Degree (MBBS) from University College and the Middlesex School of Medicine (UCSM) in 1991. He was awarded numerous prizes including the 1991 University of London Gold Medal for the highest ranked performance amongst over 1000 medical graduates. Dr Sarkar worked at the Royal Brompton, Hammersmith, St Thomas’ and the Middlesex Hospitals as an SHO and attained membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 1994. He commenced cardiology training in 1994 working at Frimley Park, Great Ormond Street and St Georges’ Hospitals. In 1997 Dr Sarkar was awarded funding for a PhD fellowship by the British Heart Foundation and spent 3 years researching the role of nitric oxide in cardiac function. The work was carried out between the National Heart and Lung Institute at the Royal Brompton and the Rayne Institute at UCL. The PhD was supervised by Prof Sian Harding and Prof Sir Patrick Vallance. Between 2000-2004, Dr Sarkar completed his cardiology training at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and St Georges’ London. This period included subspecialty training in coronary intervention. He was appointed as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Derriford Hospital in November 2004. He was subsequently invited to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP). The Derriford Dept of Cardiology performs 900 PCI procedures annually with Dr Sarkar completing in excess of 150 cases with good clinical outcomes. This includes complex intervention with intracoronary imaging with IVUS and OCT as well as rotablation and shockwave treatment for heavily calcified arteries. Dr Sarkar participates in emergency primary angioplasty rota for treating acute myocardial infarction. In addition to coronary intervention Dr Sarkar performs pacemaker and ILR insertion Dr Sarkar has a substantial commitment to medical education. He is the head of undergraduate clinical cardiology teaching for Plymouth University Peninsula School of Medicine (PUPSMED). He is the postgraduate Training Programme Director (TPD) for cardiology in the Peninsula Deanery and sits on the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Advisory Committee and the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) Training and Education group.
