Mr Andy Thompson

Andy Thompson graduated from Manchester Medical school in 1991. He undertook his basic surgical training in Manchester, Wigan and Liverpool in addition to a year teaching at Leeds medical school.  He moved into higher surgical training in Urology in the North West (Manchester Deanery) and received his certificate of specialist training in 2002, before taking up his consultant post in Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust in January 2003. He had been a medical student, newly qualified doctor (house officer) and junior surgical doctor (SHO) within the trust at various times in his training. He has a keen interest in clinical audit and during his time in the trust he has been audit lead for the urology department and for the trust as well as spending several years as chair of the North west Regional urology audit group. during which time the urology departments within the Liverpool Deanery region were integrated into the group. For the past 10 years he has been clinical lead for the urology department and was very involved in the design and establishment of the Richmond Urology unit at leigh. He is also a trainer and training lead within the department His practise is in all aspects of core urology and cancer diagnostics with a subspeciality interest in female urology and bladder pain syndrome. He has authored several papers on the management and treatment of chronic cystitis including UK guidelines on radiation disease of the bladder. The scope of his private practise reflects his NHS practise.
